Folk Tales of Wales – Cap Coch

On the banks of the river Ogmore, near where the dipping bridge stands now, there used to be an inn. It was run by a fiendish man who used to wear a red cap and so became known as Cap Coch.

What the people who visited his inn did not know, was that he was a highwayman. In the still of night he would murder travelors staying at his inn, rob them of their posessions, and dispose of their bodies in shallow graves in the fields and woods along the river bank. Only 80 years after his death did the full horror of his activities get discovered. When the inn was demolished a cave was discovered running off what used to be the kitchen. It was full of stolen booty.

Suspecting foul play the local magistrate ordered that the garden and surrounding land should be dug up to see what other secrets remain hidden there. No sooner than they had started to dig than grave after grave got discovered, each with the skeletons of 2 or 3 people in them. As for Cap Coch himself, he never stood trial for any of these deeds. Some say he lived into his 90s and died peacefully. Others say he was hung at Stalling down for stealing a sheep.

Cap Coch

Ar lannau afon Ogwr, yn ymyl safle’r bont dipio heddiw, roedd tafarn yn arfer bod yno. Cai ei rhedeg gan ddyn dieflig a arferai wisgo cap coch ac felly daeth yn adnabyddus fel Cap Coch.

Yr hyn na wyddai’r bobl a ymwelai â’i dafarn oedd ei fod yn lleidr pen ffordd. Yn y nos, byddai’n llofruddio teithwyr a fyddai’n aros yn ei dafarn, dwyn eu heiddo, a gwaredu eu cyrff mewn beddau bas yn y caeau a’r coedwigoedd ar hyd glan yr afon. Nid tan 80 mlynedd ar ôl ei farwolaeth y daeth gwir arswyd ei weithredoedd i’r amlwg. Pan ddymchwelwyd y dafarn, darganfuwyd ogof yn rhedeg oddi ar yr hyn a arferai fod y gegin. Roedd yn llawn trysor wedi’i ddwyn.

Gan amau trosedd, gorchmynnodd yr ynad lleol y dylid cloddio’r ardd a’r tir cyfagos i weld pa gyfrinachau eraill oedd yn dal i fod yn guddiedig yno. Dywed rhai ei fod wedi byw tan ei fod yn ei 90au ac wedi marw’n dawel. Dywed eraill ei fod wedi’i grogi yn Stalling Down am ddwyn dafad.
